IT'S FIVE PLAYED, FIVE WON - BUT BRICKIES LEAVE IT LATE AGAIN

IT’S five wins in five games now to start the season - but yet again the table-topping Brickies did it the hard way, having to come from behind late in the game to see off a stubborn Amesbury side. Starting the day unbeaten in second place, Amesbury were below top strength - but their levelling benefit came in the shape of the freak weather conditions of rain and a gale-force swirling wind. That not only took the edge off the quality of the game as a spectacle, but also contributed to the goal which stunned the stadium soon after the hour mark. Amesbury were awarded a controversial free kick around 30 yards out slightly to the left of goal. Callum Sweeney lined it up, and maybe by luck, maybe by perfect judgement of the wind, sent it sailing with absolute perfection, into the far top corner. Lloyd Thomas in the New Milton goal, would have needed a step ladder to get there, the ball having started its trajectory at least five yards wide the goal before swerving back viciously on the wind. It was a serious wake-up call for the Brickies and they stepped up their game accordingly. Chances came and went in the next ten minutes before, on the 70-minute mark, Joe Roberts brought down a cross from the left, turned and stabbed it perfectly into the corner. At least the Brickies were back in the game, but one point was not the target. Enter Callum Clarke, who had been close a couple of times earlier and on 78 minutes brought the house down in appreciation as he cut in from the left and rifled a drive perfectly into the far corner. With Amesbury stung by the turnaround there were still one or two anxious moments to come as the clock ticked down, but by then the rain had stopped, the wind had eased, and three more points were in the bag. Man of the Match was Callum Clarke, and the crowd 165 - for which the club was duly grateful. Chairman Gary Squires said: “For so many people to turn out to cheer us on in weather that was truly awful, is amazing. We’d like to thank each and every one who came today.” Meanwhile, the 100pc record goes on the line again on Tuesday when Romsey have asked to play what would have been their “home” game against New Milton that night at the GD Print Stadium instead. Please note as it’s technically “Romsey’s home game”, New Milton season tickets will not be valid.
